Traditionally used
Spiritual cleansing, insect bites, toothache, wounds, respiratory ailments, ritual protection
Prepared as
The leaves are traditionally dried in shade for several days, then prepared as a cold water infusion by steeping 1-2 fresh leaves or 1 teaspoon dried leaves in room temperature water for 15-20 minutes. For spiritual cleansing baths, tobacco leaves are boiled with other protective herbs at rolling boil for 10 minutes, then cooled before use. Internal preparations use very small amounts - no more than 1/4 teaspoon of dried leaf steeped in hot water for 5 minutes, taken sparingly due to the plant's potent nature.
