Sage (Saj) — Salvia officinalis, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Botanical note

Native to the Mediterranean karst of Herzegovina, an aromatic grey sub-shrub of sun-baked limestone. It scents the ground at Počitelj old town, the Hutovo Blato wetland, Kravica waterfall, and Mostarska Bijela on the Neretva. Flowers May to July.

Traditionally used

Menopause: hot flashes, night sweats (antihidrotic). Pharyngitis/tonsillitis (gargle — antiseptic). Digestive dyspepsia. Memory/cognitive support (traditional). Excessive perspiration.

In Haitian practice

Saj itilize tradisyonèlman ann Ayiti pou gòj fè mal (gargarism), siwe twòp, ak pwoblèm règ. Bouyi ak dlo sèl pou rense bouch ak gòj. Kèk fanm itilize li pou redui lèt manman lè yo vle sèvraj. La sauge est utilisée en Haïti pour les maux de gorge (gargarisme), la transpiration excessive et les troubles menstruels; utilisée aussi pour réduire la montée de lait lors du sevrage.

Essential oil (thujone, camphor, 1,8-cineole) — antispasmodic, antiseptic, antihidrotic. Diterpenoids (carnosol) — antioxidant. Phytoestrogenic activity. Cholinesterase inhibition (memory).
