Traditionally used

Swallow-wort gentian has been traditionally used in Balkan folk medicine as a digestive bitter to stimulate appetite and support liver function. The plant is also employed as a febrifuge to reduce fever and as a general tonic to strengthen the constitution during times of weakness or convalescence.

Prepared as

The roots are typically prepared as a cold maceration by soaking 1-2 teaspoons of dried root in cold water for 8-12 hours, then strained and consumed. Alternatively, a hot decoction can be made by simmering the roots for 10-15 minutes.
