Traditionally used
⚠ A strong laxative — short-term use only; long-term use can harm the liver and deplete potassium. Not in pregnancy or for children. Strong stimulant laxative (occasional constipation only). Traditional Chinese medicine: digestive tonic at low doses, purgative at high doses.

Chemistry
Anthraquinone glycosides (sennosides, rhein, emodin, aloe-emodin) — stimulate colon. At low doses: astringent tannins dominate. At high doses: laxative anthraquinones.
