Chemistry
Anthraquinone glycosides (frangulin A, B; glucofrangulin) — irritant effect on colon, increases intestinal motility. Bark must be aged (fresh bark causes vomiting).

Kreyòl — Konstipatyon osasyonèl (laksatif stimilan). Pou ti tan sèlman. Bourdèn (bourdaine) disponib nan diaspora ayisyen kòm laksatif lejè pou konstipasyon okazyon. Ekòs sèk sèlman — janm itilize frèch.
Français — Constipation occasionnelle (laxatif stimulant). Usage à court terme uniquement. La bourdaine est disponible dans la diaspora haïtienne comme laxatif léger pour la constipation occasionnelle; écorce séchée uniquement — jamais utilisée fraîche.
