Sweet potato (patat) — Ipomoea batatas, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Diabetes, digestive issues, inflammation, wounds, skin conditions, anemia, fatigue

Prepared as

The leaves are typically prepared as a tea by steeping 1-2 tablespoons of fresh leaves or 1 tablespoon dried leaves in hot water (just below boiling, around 180-190°F) for 10-15 minutes, then strained and consumed 2-3 times daily for digestive issues and to support lactation in nursing mothers. The roots can be grated fresh and applied as a poultice directly to wounds, boils, or inflamed skin, or boiled and the cooled water used as a wash for skin conditions. For internal use, a decoction is made by simmering chopped fresh roots in water for 20-30 minutes, taking 1/4 to 1/2 cup twice daily for stomach ailments and as a general tonic.
