Water Pepper — Persicaria hydropiper, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Water pepper carries a sharp, peppery bite and a strong load of tannin. It is taken as a cool-drawn tisane, a cup several times a day, where the tradition is to steady heavy or painful menstrual bleeding and to ease hemorrhoidal complaints. The fresh crushed plant is laid in compresses over weeping or suppurating skin. The leaf also serves, sparingly, as a peppery condiment for salads and soups.
