Norway spruce — Picea abies, used in Adriatic and Balkan herbal tradition

Botanical note

Native spruce that builds the old-growth Dinaric forests. In Bosnia it stands in the primeval woods of Perućica and Janj, in Kozara National Park, and on the slopes of Jahorina and Konjuh. Pollen falls April to May.

Traditionally used

⚠ The turpentine oil is a strong skin irritant; internal use belongs to guided care. Norway spruce gives both a resinous turpentine and a vitamin-rich needle oil. Purified turpentine is an antiseptic for the airways, used in chronic and foul bronchial conditions, while a needle-extract bath brings warmth and circulation to gout, sciatica, rheumatism, and weariness. Fresh spring shoots are a homely source of vitamin C.
