Tamarind (Pye tamaren) — Tamarindus indica, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Fever, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, eye infections, wound healing, hypertension, diabetes

Prepared as

For digestive issues and fever, prepare tamarind water by soaking 2-3 tablespoons of fresh tamarind pulp in 2 cups of room temperature water for 2-4 hours, then strain and drink 1/2 cup twice daily. For constipation relief, boil the pulp with water for 10-15 minutes to make a stronger decoction, cooling before consuming 1/4 to 1/2 cup as needed. The leaves can be brewed as tea by steeping 1-2 teaspoons of dried leaves in hot water (not boiling) for 8-10 minutes, drinking 1 cup daily for diabetes management and wound healing when used as a wash.
