Prepared as

The root bark is traditionally prepared as a decoction by boiling 1-2 tablespoons of dried root in 2 cups of water for 15-20 minutes, then straining while hot. For medicinal use, the preparation is cooled to room temperature and taken in doses of 1/4 to 1/2 cup, 2-3 times daily for digestive ailments and as a blood purifier. The fresh leaves can also be crushed and applied directly as a poultice for external skin conditions, or prepared as a warm tea using 1 teaspoon of dried leaves steeped in hot water for 10 minutes.
