Sesame (wowoli) — Sesamum indicum, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Skin conditions, wound healing, hair growth, constipation, joint pain, lactation support

Prepared as

Seeds are traditionally cold-pressed to extract oil for topical applications, or ground into paste and mixed with warm water (body temperature) to create a soothing drink for respiratory ailments. For digestive issues, 1-2 teaspoons of whole seeds are soaked in room temperature water overnight, then consumed with the soaking liquid first thing in the morning. Leaves are prepared as a warm tea by steeping 1 tablespoon of fresh leaves in hot water (not boiling) for 10-15 minutes, taken 2-3 times daily for wound healing and inflammation.
