Sapodilla (Pye sapoti) — Achras sapota, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Diarrhea, dysentery, fever, cough, wounds, skin infections, diabetes, hypertension

Prepared as

The bark is traditionally prepared by boiling 2-3 pieces in 3 cups of water at a rolling boil for 15-20 minutes, then steeped covered for another 10 minutes to create a bitter tea for diarrhea and dysentery, taken 1/2 cup three times daily. Fresh leaves are crushed and applied directly to wounds as a poultice, or 4-5 leaves can be boiled in 2 cups water for 10 minutes to make a warm wash for skin conditions. The latex from young fruits is mixed with coconut oil and gently warmed to create a topical remedy for removing warts and treating skin infections.
