Holly — Ilex aquifolium, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

A decoction of holly leaves is astringent and rouses the body's excretory organs — gut, kidneys, skin and lungs — and it has an old name in gout, rheumatism and diarrhoea. Steep a tablespoon of the leaves in a cup of cold water, bring to the boil for ten minutes, and sip it through the day. ⚠ The bright red berries are quite another matter: they irritate the gut and are poisonous, and dangerously so to children, who are drawn to them — keep the berries well out of reach.

In three languages
