Downy Hemp-nettle — Galeopsis segetum, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

A gentle expectorant for a loose, catarrhal chest. Its bitters, saponins and silicic acid loosen bronchial phlegm and ease the cough that lingers after a cold. Steep a tablespoon of the dried herb in a covered cup for ten to twelve minutes and sweeten with honey; it sits well beside elder, mint, plantain, thyme or Iceland moss. The old use as a "lung tisane" for consumption has been set aside — hold to the plain catarrhal reading.

In three languages
