Alder buckthorn (Boudin) — Frangula alnus, used in Haitian and Caribbean herbal tradition

Traditionally used

Alder buckthorn bark has been traditionally used as a gentle laxative for constipation and to support liver and gallbladder function. The aged bark is preferred for its milder action compared to fresh bark, which can cause griping and nausea.

Prepared as

The bark is prepared as a decoction by simmering 1-2 teaspoons of dried, aged bark in water for 10-15 minutes. Only bark aged at least one year should be used to avoid harsh effects.
