The Crossing · Journey III

The River That Doubles Back

Travnik, Vlašić & Jajce · Nine nights, ten days · Eight guests · four rooms

Early June & mid-August

The water-led crossing: the vizier town beneath its fortress, raw milk turned to cheese on the Vlašić pasture, elderflower cold-steeping along the Pliva lakes — and the waterfall that falls through the middle of Jajce.

The plant thread

Achillea millefolium · Rubus idaeus · Sambucus nigra

Yarrow in flower in meadow grass, Achillea millefolium
A ripe and an unripe raspberry on the cane, Rubus idaeus
An elderflower umbel, Sambucus nigra

Yarrow through the grass on the Vlašić plateau, wild raspberry at the meadow's edge, elderflower gathered along the Pliva lakes and set to cold-steep into a cordial across the Jajce days — carried to the closing table and bottled to travel, the same way of attending brought from the Haitian tradition to a valley that turns back on itself.
