The Layered Kingdom

Sarajevo & Central Bosnia · Nine nights, ten days · Eight guests · four rooms

May–June & September

Sarajevo in its valley, the old town beneath the surrounding hills

Wild garlic foraged from the Sarajevo hills, elder in flower along the mill-lakes, sage in the Neretva gorge — the layered kingdom, from coppersmith mornings to the turquoise canyon, first crown to last.

The plant thread

Allium ursinum · Sambucus nigra · Salvia

An elderflower umbel, Sambucus nigra
Sage leaves, Salvia officinalis

Wild garlic gathered from the Sarajevo hills in May, elderflower along the medieval mill-lakes at Jajce, sage in the Neretva gorge — foraged and set at the table with the hosts, the plant thread carried through a landscape thick with history.
