The Layered Kingdom

Sarajevo, Visoko & the Highlands · Nine nights, ten days · Eight guests · four rooms

June & September

Sarajevo in its valley, the old town beneath the surrounding hills

The kingdom read in layers: coppersmith mornings in Baščaršija, wild garlic on the hills above the city, St John's wort steeping red on the Bjelašnica plateau — from the coronation valley at Visoko to the plane trees over the source of the Bosna.

The plant thread

Allium ursinum · Hypericum perforatum · Sambucus nigra

Wild garlic in flower on the woodland floor
St John's wort in flower, Hypericum perforatum
An elderflower umbel, Sambucus nigra

Wild garlic from the wooded slopes above Sarajevo in May, St John's wort gathered on the Bjelašnica meadows and set in oil to turn slowly red, elderflower in the thermal park at Ilidža — foraged with the one who knows the ground, then carried to the table, the same way of attending brought from the Haitian tradition onto colder soil.
