The Crossing · Journey I

The Karst Spring

Herzegovina · Nine nights, ten days · Eight guests · four rooms

Late March–May & September–October

The dervish house at Blagaj, built against the cliff at the source of the Buna

The karst root of the whole crossing: rosemary and sage on warm stone, lavender at Stolac, immortelle above the turquoise Buna — from the wine country behind the coast to the bridge at Mostar.

The plant thread

Rosmarinus · Salvia · Lavandula · Helichrysum italicum

Rosemary in flower on karst stone
Sage leaves, Salvia officinalis
A bee on lavender, Lavandula angustifolia
Immortelle in bud, Helichrysum italicum

The plant layer runs the length of the route and leads it. Rosemary and sage on the karst, lavender pressed against warm limestone at Stolac, immortelle foraged above the Buna spring — gathered, distilled, and steeped with the hosts, the same way of attending carried from the Haitian tradition to a different ground.
